Clay Workshop Instructor & Studio Support
Location: Paint-In Memories – Santurce, Puerto Rico
Position Type: Part-Time

About Paint-In Memories
Paint-In Memories is a creative studio where people come to disconnect from stress, reconnect with their creativity, and create lasting memories through art.
We offer pottery painting, clay workshops, canvas painting, glass fusion, candle pouring, tote bag painting, and other creative experiences in a welcoming, organized, and social environment.
Our customers aren’t simply purchasing an art project—they’re coming for an experience.
As our clay program continues to grow, we’re looking for a Clay Workshop Instructor & Studio Support team member who already has a strong foundation in clay and feels comfortable sharing that knowledge with others.
About the Position
This is a hands-on position combining clay instruction, customer experience, and general studio support.
The right person should be able to confidently guide customers through beginner-friendly clay projects while creating an environment that feels relaxed, encouraging, organized, and fun.
You don’t need to be a master ceramicist.
You do need enough hands-on experience with clay to recognize what works, what doesn’t, troubleshoot common problems, demonstrate techniques correctly, and confidently guide someone who has never touched clay before.
Minimum Clay Experience
Applicants should have at least 2 years of hands-on experience working with clay.
You should be comfortable with foundational hand-building techniques, including:
- Pinch
- Coil
- Slab construction
- Scoring and slipping
- Attaching handles and other clay elements
- Basic surface decoration and texture
- Understanding appropriate clay thickness
- Recognizing clay at different stages of dryness
- Helping prevent cracking, weak attachments, and other common construction problems
Experience with glazing, firing, kiln operation, studio ceramics, or additional clay techniques is a plus, but not necessary, as we will train you our way anyway.
We’re primarily looking for someone with a solid hand-building foundation and the ability to teach it well.
Teaching Experience Required
Knowing how to work with clay and knowing how to teach clay are two different skills.
We’re looking for someone who has experience teaching, instructing, assisting, or guiding others in a creative environment.
That experience may come from:
- Clay or ceramics classes
- Art workshops
- Community programs
- Camps
- Schools
- Private lessons
- Group instruction
- Other hands-on creative teaching environments
You should be comfortable standing in front of a group, demonstrating a project step-by-step, answering questions, noticing when someone needs help, and keeping the class moving without making participants feel rushed.
Our workshops may include people who are nervous, convinced they’re «not artistic,» or touching clay for the first time.
Part of your job is helping them realize: Yes, you can do this.
What You’ll Do
As a Clay Workshop Instructor, you’ll help prepare and lead scheduled clay experiences at Paint-In Memories.
Responsibilities may include preparing clay and materials before workshops, setting up workstations, demonstrating projects and techniques, guiding participants throughout the experience, troubleshooting pieces, helping customers personalize their work, monitoring the condition of completed pieces, and properly organizing projects after workshops.
You’ll also help maintain an organized clay workspace and communicate clearly with the team regarding pieces that require drying, firing, painting, glazing, or additional attention. Inventory on clay, tools, and machines.
Provide a minimum of 3 workshops a week. Primarily but not limited to Saturdays & Sundays.
Studio Support Is Part of the Position
This is not an instructor-only position.
Paint-In Memories is a working creative studio, and everyone contributes to the customer experience.
When you’re not actively teaching a clay workshop, you may assist with regular studio operations, including:
- Welcoming and assisting customers
- Explaining creative experiences
- Preparing tables and materials
- Resetting and cleaning workstations
- Washing and organizing tools
- Maintaining clean creative areas
- Helping with studio opening or closing procedures
- Assisting with events and groups
- Supporting other team members during busy periods
- Helping keep the studio organized, stocked, and ready for customers
We are looking for someone who understands that teaching the workshop and cleaning the table afterward are both part of creating an excellent experience.
Who We’re Looking For
You’ll likely be a strong fit if you are:
Bi-ligual in English and Spanish — we serve locals and travelers/tourists.
Creative — You genuinely enjoy making things and helping others create.
Patient — Beginners ask questions, make mistakes, change their minds, and sometimes need reassurance.
Comfortable teaching — You can explain something more than one way when someone doesn’t understand the first explanation.
Observant — You notice when a handle isn’t attached properly or when someone is quietly struggling before the piece becomes a problem.
Organized — Clay workshops involve tools, materials, customer pieces, drying schedules, and multiple steps.
Reliable — Scheduled workshops depend on the instructor being there and prepared.
Warm and encouraging — We want customers to feel supported, not judged.
A team player — You’re willing to jump in where needed instead of thinking, «That’s not my job.»
Availability
Paint-In Memories is open:
Wednesday–Friday: 2:00 PM–10:00 PM
Saturday: 10:00 AM–10:00 PM
Sunday: 11:00 AM–9:00 PM
Team members may be scheduled before opening for preparation and after closing for cleanup, depending on the shift or event.
Applicants must have availability that overlaps meaningfully with our operating hours.
Evening and weekend availability is important.
Because workshops and events occasionally require schedule changes or additional coverage, flexibility is highly valued.
This Position May NOT Be the Right Fit If…
You love pottery but have only recently started learning clay.
You’re looking for a position where you’ll only create your own artwork.
You’re uncomfortable teaching groups.
You prefer working independently without interacting frequently with customers.
You’re not comfortable helping with cleaning, setup, breakdown, or general studio operations.
We’re happy to help the person we hire learn our systems, projects, workshop flow, customer experience standards, and studio procedures.
However, we are not hiring someone to teach clay from the beginning. You should arrive with an existing foundation that we can build upon.
